This vignetted carte de visite of South Carolina politician and Confederate General Robert Barnwell Rhett bears an E. & H. T. Anthony of New York backmark.

Rhett was a fire-eater and pro-slavery politician, serving for years in Congress from South Carolina. As the publisher of the Charleston Mercury Rhett advocated for secession and then celebrated it with the famous December 20, 1860 proclamation that “The Union is Dissolved!”
