Description

The Life and Letters of Captain John Brown… is one of the earliest biographies of the radical abolitionist and author of the Harper’s Ferry Raid.

This is a particularly scarce work compiled by a noted Irish abolitionist and friend of William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass. It is important for the inclusion of letters written by Brown while in prison awaiting execution. There are also remembrances of Brown by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker, William Lloyd Garrison, and Wendell Phillips.

The superb frontispiece is an original albumen photo of Brown.

Lightly sunned; lightly scuffed and soiled boards; lightly shaken at front hinge; light foxing throughout, else very good.

Handsome.
