Description

Peter Cozzens used the recently discovered memoirs of his subject to write the first comprehensive biography, General John Pope: A Life for the Nation.

John Pope’s life story is, for the most part, fascinating because of the fierce criticism he earned for his handling of the summer campaign of 1862, in Northern Virginia. His blustering public pronouncements, his decisive defeat at Second Manassas and his vindictive legal pursuit of his subordinate Fitz John Porter, combine to make Pope look like more of a caricature than a person. Yet, the entirety of his life and career reveal a complex and interesting man, and a man who continued to pursue a career of high-minded military service even after his defeat and disgrace.

Other officers, more kindly remembered, quit after their defeats. Pope saluted, and accepted his next assignment.
