Description
The Old Uncle Ned songster is a tiny pamphlet of lyrics (only) to comic and sentimental songs, many touching on slavery and black life.
Songs included: “Uncle Ned;” “Massa’s in the Cold Ground;” “Night Funeral of a Slave;” “The Darkies’ Serenade;” and “Uncle Tom’s gone to Rest.” The front cover shows an old black man leaning on a cane, and the back cover two well-dressed men drinking. These cuts are repeated as frontispieces.
Small marginal cover chips; light wear, but well-preserved for these. This is an unusual Civil War era-African American-related piece of ephemera.
Old Uncle Ned. Songster. Philadelphia: Fisher and Brother, 1860. 32mo.; discontinuous pagination; original woodcut illustration; salmon wrappers.
