Description

Iowa in War Times is S. H. M. Byers’ semi-official account of the participation of Iowa troops in the Civil War. During the war Byers was a noncommissioned officer and then adjutant of the 5th Iowa Infantry Regiment.

Byers provides reliable overviews of the service of Iowa regiments at battles such as Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Iuka, Corinth, Vicksburg and elsewhere. He goes further to give a good account of the state’s reaction to the conflict and its organizational difficulties.

Byers was a prominent person in the state at the time he wrote this work, and it is filled with first-hand conversations with high-ranking officers. An important record by a prominent veteran and later-life confidant of General Sherman.

Full leather with raised spine, gilt lettering and device, and all edge gilt. Hinges repaired within; front hinge split on the outside; light foxing; light chipping of the extremities with slight loss to headband; else very good. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by Byers.
